The problem with trying to encapsulate this idea with examples is that there are too many variables. Different men will have different ideas about what is an acceptable out for their ego, and different men will bring to the table different perceptions about things like being lesbian, asexual, or other possible deflections.

Some men will respect your examples, others, as you've experienced, won't. Keep in mind that some men won't respect *any* response other than "yes," so it's not really about the particulars.
