Everybody would prefer to live in a more honest world.

Women do not say "I have a boyfriend," because of a lack of maturity, they do it for safety. Many men will become hostile and aggressive when flat out rejected. Maybe only a minority of men, but women can't know which men will turn out to be dangerous or not until it's too late. So it's better to deflect in all cases.
