Yes, it's absolutely true that a lot of men have backwards ideas about women and their agency. But, there are also men who do not, and those men still accept "I have a boyfriend" vs "no." For me, the explanation that encompasses the widest amount of circumstances is the one that's more likely to be fundamental.
